THE RUN DOWN
Monday:  100's on the minute.  I don't know how many I did, but it was a bunch.  18 sounds like the right number.  Lifted afterwards.
Tuesday:  300, 400, 500, 500, 400, 300.  Asides from getting slow, I don't see anything beneficial from running these long ladder workouts.  Coach'll
say something about this workout is good for aerobic conditioning, but I'm not hearing that noise.
Wednesday:  Pumped some iron.  Someday I'm going to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime.  Just you wait and see.  My current 150-pound frame will deceive you.
Thursday:  Ran 8 200's at a brisk to very brisk pace.  Started at 30 and then dropped to 25ish.  Lifted.
Friday:  Ran some stairs and lifted.
Saturday:  Worst workout of the week.  Ran a 6 by 6 on a hill.  Okay, so this is a 6 by 6 ... you run 150 meters up a freaking steep hill 6 times in less than 6 minutes.  It might sound easy, but believe me when I say reps 4 and 5 sneak-up on yea.
Sunday:  Off

ROUND HERE

Life is going well.  I guess I don't have too much interesting happening in my world right now.  This whole week was all about starting-up with the school year routine.  Work.  Class.  Work.  Practice.  Class.  Day-in and day-out.  That's my routine this fall.  I know it isn't too glamorous or exciting, but this is my last fall semester and despite my boring schedule I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

And speaking of seeing lights at end of tunnels, my roommate P.J. who is a hurdler on the team thought it would be a good idea to see how long he could shine a flashlight into his eyes.  I don't know about you, but that doesn't sound like too much fun.  Stupid sophomore.

LEADER OF THE PACK

The first installment of my Leader of the Pack Award goes to none other than Bryce Beckman.  He ran those 2 hundos with me on Thursday and I got taken to school.  Keep up the great work Bryce.

WORTHLESS WORDS OF WISDOM

This weeks worthless words of wisdom comes courteous of my coach, Steve Mathre.

"You know something, if we cross that finish-line first we'll win the race."

Yes coach, how right you are.  John Madden couldn't have said it better.

[b?THE RUN DOWN [/b]
Monday: 100's on the minute. I felt pretty flat today so I only ran 16. Lifted weights.

Tuesday: Had to practice inside because it rained like cats and dogs. I biked indoors and pumped some iron.

Wednesday: Quality workout day. Ran 6 fast 150's on a hill.

Thursday: It rained like cats and dogs again. I did a rowingworkout indoors and then pumped iron. Friday: I was in a car accident. Took the day off.

Saturday: Took the day off again. I think being in that car accident made me put more of my life into perspective.

Sunday: My original workout schedule had me taking this day off, and despite only taking 2 days off with my accident I felt like it would be a good time to get back to my regular workout schedule. So, I took today off.

ROUND HERE

Yeah, so on Friday my twin brother Cassidy and I were in car accident. (As a side note, Cassidy is also a sprinter on Saint Thomas' track team.) So back to the story...Cassidy and I were driving up to Fargo, North Dakota for my old roommate's wedding. About 20 minutes into a 4-hour drive a car sped by us at about 100 mph, then preceded to merge into the lane of traffic we were in, and deliberately slammed on his brakes right in front of us. This caused us to take evasive action. We slammed on our brakes causing our car to spin. After doing 2 complete 360's we ended up blocking 3 lanes of traffic on the interstate. To say the least, it was quite an experience. Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt. And I would like to report Luke and Anna are now married. Congratulations guys!!

So to change the subject, why in the world has the NCAA decided to cut the length of the season for several sports? As an example, take a look at Division III track. Our season has been cut 2 weeks! Now the start of the D-III season doesn't officially begin until mid-November. This is absolutely ridiculous! Now there will be guys such as myself who have started fall training already who can't benefit from any technique work from a coach until Thanksgiving!!! My gosh!!! This was a brilliant idea by the NCAA!!! (Note the use of sarcasm in the last statement.) I thought fall training was supposed to be used as a means to get in shape, receive some technique work from the coach that you wouldn't otherwise receive during the regular season, get to meet the new freshman on the team and better bond with your teammates, and more importantly have some fun. Apparently, the NCAA doesn't hold these values about fall practice as strongly as myself or some of you other student-athletes.

LEADER OF THE PACK

The second installment of my Leader of the Pack Award goes to none other than Matt Schroeder This kid is tough as nails. Matt is a pole vaulter on the team who instead of doing the pole vault workouts has been doing the long sprinter workouts. Talk about being taken out of your element! Keep up the great work Matt!

WORDS OF WISDOM

This week's words of wisdom come courteously from Mr. Jack Handey:

"Instead of studying for finals, what about just going to the Bahamas and catching some rays? Maybe you'll flunk, but you might have flunked anyway; that's my point."

THE RUN DOWN

Monday: As usual, 100's on the minute. Got 20 of them done today. I felt pretty good. Lifted weights like Superman.

Tuesday: Ran a bogus workout. 4x600's. 600's take forever to run. Lifted beach muscles. Oh, I'm going to look good in that bathing suit this spring!

Wednesday: Played king of the hill. Ran 5x300's on the hill. I got my butt kicked. The hill won this time, but next time...it'll be a different story.

Thursday: Ma came into town, so I didn't do much for practice. Just did a short warm up and cool down.
[?r]Friday: Down poured all day, so I had to run on the indoor track. I absolutely hate running indoor track. Tall guys such as myself aren't made for running fast in small little circles. The workout was 7x300's.

Saturday: Off day. Went and supported the Tommie football team. They dominated the Ole's.

Sunday: Off day. I did homework all day long.

ROUND HERE

So, how about them Presidential Debates?? Personally, I wasn't impressed with either candidate. All of America, and the world for that matter, knows about Bush and his leadership capabilities (or lack there of). Don't get me wrong here, Bush has done some good things for America in the past 4 years. Heck, I even voted for Bush the first time around. It's just that I don't feel our current occupation of Iraq is being well justified and Bush's domestic policies are questionable. And as far as Kerry goes, it seems all he ever does is play the bipartisan card. Everything Bush stands for Kerry is opposed. If you were to meet Kerry in the street and ask him what he stood for I'm sure his response would be "I stand for everything Bush doesn't stand for." I can't make up my mind for who I'll vote for, but right now Bush and Kerry don't impress me at all. Maybe it'll finally be Nader who wins!

Anyways, life is starting to get stressful. I feel sad to say that track hasn't been the center of my attention. I've been spending most of my time worrying about what I'll be doing after college. I've applied to three different positions in the Twin Cities, and I'm planning on applying to three more in the next week. I just want the security of knowing that when I graduate this spring I'll have a job ready and waiting for me. That would be nice. It would be a huge weight lifted off my shoulders if I could just do this. Oh well....

Classes are starting to pick up. We have been in class for 1 month now, and I can already feel the pressure of midterms sneaking up. Arg! Damn you midterm!

On a better note, this coming Christmas my girlfriend Karolien and I will be traveling to Belgium to see her family. Yes!

LEADER OF THE PACK

The third installment of my Leader of the Pack Award goes to none other than Jeremy Krentz. Jeremy, otherwise known as Quicksand, showed his All-American track speed on the gridiron with a 71- yard interception return for a TD. Nice job Quicksand!

WORDS OF WISDOM

This week's words of wisdom come from the greatest singer/songwriter of all time, none other than Dennis DeYoung, formerly of the band Styx. Styx, however, kicked Dennis out of the band, and has proceeded to suck ever since.

"A winner is only a loser who got back up."

PS- Styx: Take back Dennis

THE RUN DOWN
Monday: The usual. Ran 20x100's and lifted.

Tuesday: We had a team meeting today. I got a chance to meet some of the freshmen. Looks like our freshman class will be pretty descent. We got this recruit from a far away land who is going to surprise everyone. Ran 5x500's.

Wednesday: Today was the first day some of the freshmen practiced. Ran a hill workout. 3x300's, 3x100's, 3x300's. Looking back on things, maybe it was a bad idea to start the freshmen off on a hill workout.

Thursday: Recovery day. Did a light warm up and called it quits.

Friday: I felt kind of sick, so I took it easy. I got in a good warm up and then biked for 20 minutes.

Saturday: Took the day off. Long weekend of homework.

Sunday: I did homework, but I had to break up the day with a little workout. I was feeling guilty about not lifting 3 times this week, so I decided to do something to make up for it. I jogged for 20 minutes, got a good stretch, and did some abs.
[b?]
ROUND HERE

Mid-term is finally upon the students and UST. I love it! NOT! In case you are not familiar with mid-term at UST here is a summary: Mid-term typically last two weeks and every long night is filled with cramming and memorizing pointless facts that'll soon be forgotten. And if you happen to be one of the unfortunate students then you have to write countless essays about things that will have no effect on your life or on anyone else you know. Seriously, mid-terms are just another hoop the professors make you jump through before you can get your coveted sheep skin. Okay, I'm done being cynical.

This past week was pretty cool. I gave a presentation at work on the importance of having value added services in financial institutions. Yup, that's right folks...I gave a presentation at work on BS. It went pretty good. Unfortunately, I missed the Presidential Debate so I had to read all about it online. It appears Nader is still the front-runner. HA! And I'm depressed to report it was a sad, sad week for all Minnesotans. The Gopher football team choked like last year and lost to Michigan. And for the second consecutive year, the Twins lost to the Yankees and are eliminated from the playoffs.

FYI-the winning Powerball ticket for the $215 million jackpot was already bought by me, so you all can just forget about it.

LEADER OF THE PACK

The fourth installment of my Leader of the Pack Award goes to none other than Nate Page. Nate is a pole vaulter on the team and he's keepin' it real this fall by sweating blood in the weight room. Nate happens to be king of the clean and jerk. He's reppin' 120 kilos like it ain't a thing. Keep it up Nate!

WORDS OF WISDOM

This week's words of wisdom come from Mr. Dave Letterman:

"The first Presidential debate was down in Florida. Residents spent all day putting plywood on their televisions."

Journal 5 (October 18)

THE RUN DOWN

Monday: As usual, ran 20x100's and lifted. This will be the last time in a while I'll be doing this workout. Finally, next week I actually start sprinting.

Tuesday: More of a distance orientated workout. The workout was 4 continuous sets of jogging for 4 minutes and then striding for 1 minute. It went alright. We ended up covering a little over 2.5 miles. After the jogging I lifted beach muscles.

Wednesday: Sadly, I didn't get a chance to workout. I was in a meeting for work until almost 4 and had class from 5-9:30.

Thursday: Did some quality work on the bike and had a great lifting workout.

Friday: By far the toughest workout of the week. 8x200's all in :26 with 2:30 minutes recovery between each rep. To make matters worse I had to do this workout on the indoor track because it was raining and it was a whopping 39 degrees outside! Gotta love that Minnesota weather!

Saturday: Did some homework and went back home to see Aunty Ruth.

Sunday: A lot of hanging out took place on Sunday. Watched some football in HD on Mr. Smith's 60 inch screen. HD dominates! Also did a bunch of homework. And of course I stretched and did abs. As a side note, it snowed.

ROUND HERE

Not much to report. Midterms aren't going to good. I have this managerial finance class where the whole class just about failed. The prof didn't give back anyone's grade yet because the entire test might be thrown out. And the damn test should be thrown out. I swear the professor would have failed the test themselves if they had taken it. I got this other class that should be a breeze. It is organization behavior and my midterm presentation is on leadership. Lucky, I'm a Leadership and Management major, so this presentation thing should be smooth sailing.

Anyways, I feel my training is co?ing along good. The primary focus has been general conditioning, but in the next weeks the focus will shift to incorporate more speed and strength. Right now, I just wish I can stay healthy. It was about this time last year I developed two hernias. And me being the way I am ignored my injury until December when I had surgery to repair the tares. Not a smart idea. My advice, if you think you might feel the slightest bit hurt you should get yourself checked out ASAP.

LEADER OF THE PACK

The fifth installment of my Leader of the Pack Award goes to none other than Mr. Mike Madison! Madtown is a triple jumper on the team who will occasionally dabble in the long jump. Madtown is a good guy who recently did some editing and created a sweet looking poster of the team. Nice work hombre!

Words of Wisdom

It isn't too often a presidential candidate uses profanity to articulate their message, but that is exactly what John Kerry did when speaking to a reporter in Saint Louis:

"Did I expect George Bush to F**K it up as badly as he did? I don't think anybody did."

Nick

Journal 6 (November 8)

RECAP OF THE LAST THREE WEEKS
Unfortunately the past three weeks I haven't been as faithful to my training as I should have been. I was trying to do everything. Do well in class. Work full time. Practice. And on top of all that I've been trying to find a job for after graduation. I guess I overestimated my abilities because juggling 4 big things at once isn't the greatest. I really felt burnt out. And for the most part I still feel pretty stressed. Oh well, as soon as the season starts up in full swing things should settle down with my current job and hopefully by then I'll have a job all lined up for after school too. So, onward with the recap of the past week...

THE RUN DOWN

Monday: 8x40m in's and out's. Lifted weights.

Tuesday: Took the day off. I prioritized voting over practice. I drove 3 hours round trip with my bro to cast our votes in our hometown of Cold Spring, Minnesota.

Wednesday: 4x500's and lifted. For some reason this workout was a lot rougher than what it should have been.

Thursday: Went back to the hill. 300,200,100,300,200,100. This was a tough one. Each rep was progressively faster than the previous and the rest was cut with each rep too.

Friday: 6x300's.

Saturday: Rested. I drove home with Karolien so she could practice with her track club, Flightdeck, at Saint John's and so I could get a hair cut from the barber.

Sunday: Took the day off. Did homework as well as stretched and got an ad routine in.

ROUND HERE

On Friday Travis and me met with this big name recruit from Indiana. Ryan was his name. So, this kid was pretty good stuff. Like most recruits who come to campus Ryan was amazed at all the beautiful women Saint Thomas has to offer. Trav and me took Ryan to see the 10th ranked UST hockey team rip it up against the 2nd ranked team from Saint Norbert's College. UST defeated the defending national runner-ups 5-3. Needless to say it was pandemonium after the game. Somehow I don't think Ryan saw much of the game, as he was too preoccupied viewing the lovely ladies in the stands.

LEADER OF THE PACK

The sixth installment of my Leader of the Pack Award goes to none other than Chris Matke. Pump is a Co-Captain on the team with myself, Bryce Beckman, and Jason Schweitz. We call Chris "Pump" because...well...I'm not sure. Pump hasn't been able to practice with the team yet because he is playing football, but he's looking good out on the gridiron. Way to go Pump! Keep on keeping on!

WORDS OF WISDOM

So if you weren't living under a rock for the past week you would realize the elections are over and good ole'? George W. is in office for what appears to be another 4 years. Way to go Mr. President. My favorite quote from this past election wasn't from a political candidate at all. It was from Ashton Kutcher. Mr. Kutcher was down in Iowa representing Mr. Kerry in some rally. When Mr. Kutcher got up to the microphone the first words out of his mouth were "We got punk'd!"
********************************************************************
Journal 7 (November 14)

THE RUN DOWN
Monday: 8*40m in's and out's. Felt pretty flat. For some reason I felt like I just couldn't turn it over at all. Lifted weights.

Tuesday: Took it easy. Did some light lifting.

Wednesday: Took it real easy and did nothing.

Thursday: It was a balmy 39 degrees outside, so I was forced to practice on the indoor track. I ran three sets of the following: 600, 300, 150. After that I lifted.

Friday: Went to play king of the hill with Cassidy. I think he won. The workout was 4x200's and 8x100's. I only got 6 of the 100's done before my legs went numb at which point I decided I probably should stop. Lifted afterwards.

Saturday: Me, Cass, and his girlfriend Ashly drove up to Saint John's to watch our football team play. If we won the game there was a strong chance we would make the NCAA Playoffs. We ended up getting smoked. 0-21.

Sunday: As usual, I took the day off. Did homework as well as stretched and got in an ab routine.

ROUND HERE

It was a sad week for Saint Thomas athletics. Not only did the football time finish their season with a 0-21 loss to our rivals Saint John's, but our cross country teams didn't fair too well either. The women's cross country team finish in 4th place and just missed making a trip to NCAA's. And the men's cross country team got worked! These cats finished 10th and were way off the pace. I know it was a disappointing season for our distance crew because everyone was battling injures all year long, so a 10th place finish was sort of expected. I just hope all our guys can heal up in time for the indoor season. Supposedly our DMR team is going to be a contender. A contender for what? I don't know. Everyone will just have to wait and see.

Despite our loss to Saint John's it was good to see all the track athletes out on the gridiron do well. Quicksand was matched up against fellow Saint John's trackster Lee Clintsman. Both had good games. Quicksand had a pick and like 10 tackles and Lee had some great grabs too. Paul Gans from Saint John's also had a good game and is a decathlete and pole vault specialist. I'm not too sure what he did well at in the game, but the radio announcers gave him the coveted player of the game award. Nice job Paul! And my roommate, Peaches, also had a good game too.

Monday begins the official start of the 2005 campaign. So this means practice with coaches finally start and hopefully we can start to begin to see some of the new faces on the team.

LEADER OF THE PACK

The seventh installment of my Leader of the Pack Award goes to none other than Phillip Theisen. No one ever calls Phillip by his real name. Heck, I didn't even know Phillip's real name until halfway through last season. When Phillip is acting cool then we call him PJ. Otherwise it's almost always Peaches. Peaches is a sophomore on the team who runs the 400 hurdles and the relays. Peaches is also a wide receiver on the football team. He was arguably one of the best-unutilized talents in the entire conference. The man has furious speed and great hands, but the coaches never threw him the damn ball. He finished the big Saint John's game with like 96 yards on 5 catches all in the 4th quarter. Nice work man.
********************************************************************
Journal 8 (November 21)

Monday: 8 flying 30's. Lifted weights.

Tuesday: 2 sets of 400'? the hard way. Basically this workout is like running 10x40's with a very short break between each rep.

Wednesday: 8x200.

Thursday: 6x100 meter strides on the football field. After that we played team handball and lifted.

Friday: Water Pol!

Saturday: I hit the books.

Sunday: And yet another major homework day.

ROUND HERE

We started practice with coach this week. With the exception of the cross country and football guys we have a full squad practicing. It looks like we will be a slightly smaller team than last year, but we have a good number of quality guys who'll be able to score in the conference meet and could perform well nationally. Right now we have exactly 60 guys on the roster. Hopefully we can get 35 of those guys to score at indoor conference. Last year we had 32 different guys score so we'll see.

This week's workouts were pretty basic. Coach didn't want to scare all the new freshmen away with a monster hill workout or anything too difficult, so we did a lot of team building activities. We played team handball on Thursday. The teams were upper classman versus lower classman. Of course the upper classman dominated the handball battle, but the underclassman got their revenge on Friday when we played water polo. The young whippersnappers beat up on the old guys pretty handily.

After Thanksgiving we only have two more weeks of class left in the semester. Fortunately for me I don't have a single final exam to take. Unfortunately for me I have a whopping 7 papers due in the next 3 weeks!

LEADER OF THE PACK

The eighth installment of my Leader of the Pack Award goes to none other than Brian Welle. Brian is a freshman hurdler on the team and this was his first week of practice. He looked like a fish out of water when he did the team warm-up, but the kid held his own out on the track. Brain looked really good on Wednesday during that 200 workout. Keep up the good work kid!
